Annual golf day scores more than £24,000
Weston Park Cancer Charity has raised £24,471.94 for people facing cancer, through its annual golf day, sponsored by Special Steel Group.
Over 120 people from across the region took part in the annual golf day at the Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield, on Friday 2nd October, in celebration of Weston Park’s 50th birthday.
Since opening in 1970, Weston Park Cancer Centre has helped thousands of patients facing cancer, with world-leading expertise, pioneering practice and a commitment to the best personalised care possible. When cancer changes everything, so does the collaborative work of the hospital and Weston Park Cancer Charity. Together, they make life-saving research and trials possible, raise funds to improve facilities and care for patients and families in every sense.
The golf day has been running for over 20 years, however this year’s fundraiser had to take on a new format, considering the covid-19 pandemic and government guidelines.
Darren Hayes, Weston Park Cancer Charity’s Business Development explains “The safety of our supporters, suppliers and staff is paramount to us as a charity and therefore we made a number of changes to the golf day ahead of the event. These included inviting a reduced number of teams, running our auction online instead of in person and following government guidelines with regards to safety and social distancing.”
“This year we had a special programme of events planned to celebrate Weston Park Hospital’s 50th birthday but sadly we have had to delay or cancel many events due to the coronavirus” says Darren. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who supported our annual golf day, the only event we’ve been able to host this year, to mark 50 years of progress in understanding and treating cancer.”
Today, cancer affects one in two people – it’s more important than ever that Weston Park Cancer Centre and Weston Park Cancer Charity, continue to work in partnership, as ambitious for the next 50 years as they are proud of what they’ve already achieved.
