“We’re here for you” that is the message from Weston Park Cancer Charity, are urging people affected by cancer to access help, in support of the NHS ‘open for business’ campaign.

“Right now, many patients and their families aren’t just facing cancer. The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted so much of the treatment and support that cancer patients and their families rely on.” comments Samantha Dixon, CEO of Weston Park Cancer Charity.

Samantha continues; “Understandably this is a very anxious time for anyone affected by cancer, which is why it’s our job to care in every sense for patients and their families struggling with the practical, financial and emotional challenges as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.”

One of the key ways Weston Park Cancer Charity is supporting people is through the creation of its ‘We  Care’ social group where healthcare professionals offer regular catch up calls to help people through long-periods of isolation or shielding.

Since launching in March the cancer support team have already hundreds of calls to members of the public, with one lady commenting; “It’s so lovely of you to call to see how we are doing. What a wonderful service at such a frightening time – thank you”.

Another added; “I was feeling quite down before about being in isolation for so long, but after this chat I feel so much better and more positive.”

“The most important thing is that you don’t try to get through alone when you need help – it’s just a call away, it’s free, confidential and open to anyone living with cancer or supporting someone living with cancer, not just Weston Park patients.” comments Samantha.

Weston Park Cancer Charity’s free, confidential helpline is open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm on 0114 553 3330 for you to discuss:

  • Vital emotional support, including one-to-one mindfulness support, psychological therapy and bereavement support
  • Regular phone support to people who are self-isolating for a prolonged period through the We Care social group
  • Access to healthcare professionals for anyone who is directly affected by cancer
  • Appointments with Welfare Benefits Advisors for those with financial worries

In addition, Weston Park Cancer Charity is also offering hardship grants of up to £300 for those identified as most in need, as well as practical support including grocery shopping and picking up essential supplies.
