Weston Park Cancer Charity has launched its Star Appeal Christmas fundraiser and plans to mark the start of festivities with a heart-warming evening of thanks, celebration, reflection and song, with special guests and recorded performances from the Sheffield Cancer Choir.
In a year that has changed everything for us all, Weston Park Cancer Charity has worked hard to continue delivering support services online and over the phone for patients and families facing cancer. As we all gear up for different kind of Christmas, the charity plans to move its celebrations online, from 7.30pm on Thursday 17th December.

“It’s been extraordinary this year, but for all of the challenges, we’ve really been inspired by the people of the Sheffield and the region that help us keep shining through for patients and families”, says Sam Dixon, Weston Park Cancer Charity’s CEO. “Our staff and supporters have not let us down – we’ve been able to keep support going remotely, delivering sessions online, calling people and running our phone support service.”
The event will be broadcast online and over social media and is free. Special guests and the charity’s patrons will put in an appearance, and music will come courtesy of the Sheffield Cancer Choir, an inspirational group of women led by Darrell Re, Liz Clay and Joanne Hockney.
“Singing for us is pure joy”, says Darrell, “and we really need a bit of that this year! When we started in 2019, some of our members had never sung, or been on a stage. Within six months, we were performing on live TV! The joy and the confidence is unbelievable.”
Even the choir has kept going through lockdown, and has found new ways to keep singing and sharing with others.
“We kept singing, doing our rehearsals online, and managed a socially distanced garden party in the summer which was so lovely. We’ve even done singing therapy online that’s open to the public, and we had singers from across the country. The magical thing is that people who have hidden after cancer, lost that confidence and energy, not wanted to get out of bed…singing together has got them going again. It’s brought us all together, lifted us up and given us each other.”
The charity is hoping that at the end of a challenging year, the concert will be a chance to unwind, thank supporters join together for some singing and reflect on the incredible work the hospital and charity do to help patients and their families. “There are lots of ways people can support us and join in”, says Sam. “We’d love to get a great crowd online for the Weston Park Winter Warmer on December 17th, there’s our Christmas auction which launched on Friday 4th December and closes on 20th December, and our Star Appeal is open for donations – just go to www.westonpark.org.uk to find out more and give a little to help us keep shining through.”
