Gift Aid
Gift Aid is a simple way to make your donations or sponsorship worth 25% more, at no cost to you!
What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a scheme administered by HM Revenue and Customs which allows charities like Weston Park Cancer Charity to claim 25p from the government for every £1 that you donate. This means that every £10 will be turned into £12.50. Think what a difference that will make and at no cost to you!
Simply fill in the form and let us know if you’re a UK taxpayer and we’ll handle the rest.
If you prefer not to sign up online you can call us on 0114 553 3330 or print out this declaration form and post it to us.
Letting us know if you’re a UK tax payer is a free and quick way to make your generosity go even further. Thank you.
FAQs
The only requirement to be eligible for Gift Aid is that you’re a UK taxpayer, paying tax on your salary, savings, investments, pensions or capital gains. You can add ‘Gift Aid’ on your donations if the total tax you pay is at least equal to the amount we, and other charities you donate to, can reclaim on your donations.
If you’re unsure, give us a call on 0114 553 3330 or email charityteam@wpcancercharity.org.uk.
No. It does not cost you anything to sign up to Gift Aid. This is because Gift Aid is paid to the charity directly from HMRC and is taken from tax you have already paid. It doesn’t affect your tax status either.
The easiest thing to do is to set up an online fundraising page using Raisely. This site will collect Gift Aid declarations when people donate to your page.
If you don't want to set up an online page, you can download our sponsorship form and make sure that anyone sponsoring you who is eligible for Gift Aid, completes all the required fields and ticks the Gift Aid box. Please return this form to us when paying in your donations.
If you pay tax at a rate of 40% or above, you can claim the difference between the higher and basic rate on your donation. For example, if you donate £800 and claim Gift Aid on your gift, this makes the gross donation total £1,000. You can claim personal tax relief of £200 (the gross donation equivalent times 20%). This makes the cost of your donation £600 but the gross donation total will still be £1000. To claim the difference, you need to:
- Include all your Gift Aid eligible donations on your Self Assessment tax return
- Ask HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to amend your tax code.
- Donations made by anyone that is not a UK taxpayer.
- Donations made on behalf of someone else or a group of people. For example, you collect money from your friends and family and then make a bulk donation. To be eligible, each donor has to complete a Gift Aid declaration for their contribution on a sponsorship or declaration form.
- Donations given on behalf of companies (although companies can claim tax relief on donations to charities).
- Money raised from the sale of goods, raffles or tombolas.
- Tickets or registration fees.
Please let us know in writing or over the phone if any of your circumstances change so that we can keep your record up-to-date on our systems.
