Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Service receives £35,000 grant from Weston Park Cancer Charity

The grant will help the TYA team to offer everything from emotional support sessions to hardship grants.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals’ Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Cancer Service has been awarded a new, one-year grant of £35,000 from Weston Park Cancer Charity. The grant will bolster the TYA’s bespoke service, which supports cancer patients between the ages of 13 and 25.

The TYA team provides care from the moment of diagnosis, all the way through treatment and two years post-treatment.

Over the years, Weston Park Cancer Charity funding has helped the TYA team to provide hardship grants, emotional support sessions for patients and family members, meal vouchers, ward Wi-Fi, and more.

Charity funding also helps to cover the cost of TYA day trips, which combat isolation and foster a sense of community among patients.

Money raised for the TYA unit, including the one-year Weston Park Cancer Charity grant, is held in the Rochelle Baxter Fund.

TYA team recognised as ‘Team of the Year’

Last year’s grant recently enabled the TYA team to attend the Children and Young People's Cancer Association conference, which took place in Birmingham.

This event saw the TYA team deliver a presentation to over 200 healthcare professionals, which discussed the issues that 16 to 18-year-olds face when navigating palliative and end of life care.

At the conference, the team won the ‘Team of the Year’ award and were recognised for having achieved excellence and best practice in their delivery of treatment and patient care.

Liz Purnell, Lead Nurse of the TYA Cancer Service said:

“We’re delighted to have been awarded £35,000 from Weston Park Cancer Charity, who have supported our work for a number of years.
“This grant will help us to continue to offer a truly specialised service to our young patients, who deserve nothing less.”

Grace Rawson, Governance & Executive Support Manager at Weston Park Cancer Charity said:

“From taking the younger children to a panto every Christmas, to organising confidence workshops – the TYA team are always thinking of special ways to support their patients.
“They’re an inspirational team, and we’re very glad to be able to support their fantastic work through this grant.”

Weston Park Cancer Charity aims to be there, at every step, for the one in two people in our region who will be diagnosed with cancer.

The charity funds pioneering research, cancer support services, and treatment enhancements at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. It also offers grants to empower individuals, researchers, and groups who are working to tackle cancer through their own initiatives.
