“Weston Park were there every step of the way”: Dylan’s London Marathon story
19-year-old Dylan is raising money to thank Weston Park Cancer Centre for caring for his grandad and grandma
This year, we have three fantastic runners taking part in the London Marathon! By raising vital funds, our runners will help us to care, in every sense, for local people and families facing cancer.
With two months until race day, we spoke to 19-year-old Dylan to find out why he’s taking on this epic challenge for Weston Park Cancer Charity.
What inspired you to take on the London Marathon?
I’ve never run a marathon before, so this is a very exciting challenge. I’m really glad to have the opportunity to raise money for an amazing charity that means a lot to me.
What made you want to run the marathon for Weston Park Cancer Charity?
I wanted to run the London Marathon for Weston Park Cancer Charity to give something back for all the support they have given to my family and many others.
In 2010, my grandad was diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Thanks to the incredible treatment and therapeutic services provided by Weston Park, he was able to ring the bell and has thankfully been cancer-free for many years. Since then, he has dedicated so much of his time to fundraising as a way of saying thank you for saving his life. Watching his commitment over the years has inspired me to follow in his footsteps.
More recently, my grandma was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Once again, Weston Park were there every step of the way - not only providing outstanding medical care, but offering compassion, reassurance, and a listening ear whenever it was needed.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about fundraising or taking on a challenge for Weston Park Cancer Charity?
I’d say that it is absolutely worth it, and an incredible opportunity. It’s a fantastic charity, which needs our support so it can keep funding the best possible treatment enhancements, research and services.
What will completing the London Marathon mean to you?
Completing the London Marathon will mean so much to be personally. It is an event which I have been wanting to do for a long time, and I’m so excited to have the chance this year.
My family and friends have been supporting me at every stage of my training so far, and will be cheering me on in London too. I can’t wait for the challenge and to make everyone proud.
